Is travel from the USA to Cuba allowed?
Travel to Cuba from the United states is still authorized under 11 categories of authorized travel and require no license. However, you must comply with the requirements of the category you choose. These categories are:
– family visits;
– official business of the U.S. government, foreign governments, and certain intergovernmental organizations;
– journalistic activity;
– professional research and professional meetings;
– educational activities;
– religious activities;
– public performances, clinics, workshops, athletic and other competitions, and exhibitions;
– support for the Cuban people;
– humanitarian projects;
– activities of private foundations or research or educational institutes;
– exportation, importation, or transmission of information or information materials; and certain authorized export transactions.
How and when do I choose the category of travel?
When you book your flight or before you board your plane in the USA to Cuba, the airline will give you a form so that you can choose under which general license you are traveling. It is as simple as ticking the option. Other online services such as Airbnb will ask you to choose a category of travel.
Under which category of authorized travel can I go to Cuba with Havana Journeys?
Havana Journeys organizes private tours that comply with the general license “Support for the Cuban People” aimed at having meaningful interactions with the Cuban People. We recommend choosing that category of travel when traveling to Cuba. In the unlikely event that the U.S authorities demand you to show proof of compliance, we will provide such proof with an itinerary since our tours comply. We take responsibility for compliance during the time you spend with us.
How can I comply with the category of travel “Support for the Cuban People”?
In order to comply with this general license, every guest must undertake independent activities supporting the private sector such as private tours in classic cars, eating at privately owned restaurants known as Paladares in Cuba, drinking at private bars, staying at Airbnbs or Casas Particulares. You are advised to keep of your activities. Proof could be itinerary provided by Havana Journeys or itinerary made by yourself, receipts from private restaurants and bars, etc.
